This period saw significant advancements in printing technology, making it more accessible for people to produce affordable, mass-printed cards. Sir Henry Cole, a prominent figure in Victorian society, found himself caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. In 1843, he commissioned the artist John Horsley to create a festive design that would serve as a greeting for his friends and family. Horsley’s creation depicted a joyful scene of a family gathered around a table, partaking in holiday festivities. The card not only conveyed seasonal cheer but also carried a broader message of goodwill. It featured a central panel with the caption “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You,” setting the tone for the exchange of warm wishes during the festive season.

The concept of sending Christmas cards quickly gained traction, aligning with the Victorians’ enthusiasm for maintaining social connections and expressing sentimentality. As the penny postage system was introduced in 1840, making mail more affordable and accessible, the practice of sending cards became increasingly popular. The idea of exchanging festive greetings through these charming cards resonated with the emerging middle class, providing a tangible means to connect with loved ones, especially those who were geographically distant. In the years that followed, the popularity of Christmas cards soared. The designs became more diverse, incorporating various themes, from religious motifs to winter landscapes and depictions of Santa Claus. The introduction of chromolithography in the 1860s allowed for vibrant and intricate designs, further enhancing the visual appeal of Christmas cards.

The tradition of sending Christmas cards crossed the Atlantic, reaching the United States in the late 19th century. Americans embraced the practice with enthusiasm, contributing to the evolution of the cards’ designs and cultural significance. By the turn of the 20th century, the exchange of Christmas cards had become a firmly established and beloved holiday tradition worldwide. Today, Christmas cards continue to be a cherished part of the holiday season, evolving with the times as digital alternatives complement traditional paper greetings. Despite technological advances, the sentiment behind sending warm wishes and connecting with loved ones during this festive time remains at the heart of the enduring Christmas card tradition.

Referências:

CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY ONLINE. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2023.
